Common name: Cicada
In the last week or so there has been a significant increase in the cicada population in the Reserve. When they all start screaming it can be almost painful to the ears, when walking close to them along some of the tracks. The photo shows one of these well- camouflaged insects that I think might be Burbunga queenslandica. Sound levels as high as 120 dB have been recorded for some species of cicadas, which is at a level to cause hearing damage.
