Digitaria diffusa

Digitaria diffusaFamily: Poaceae
Genus: Digitaria
Common names: Open Summer-grass
ALA reference

I was really pleased to find this perennial native Digitaria growing in a cleared area beside the northern firetrail. It is superficially similar to the introduced species, Digitaria didactyla (Queensland Blue Couch), but has broader leaves. When in flower it can be instantly distinguished from Digitaria didactyla because the racemes do not arise from a single point on the flower stem but connect progressively. I’m hoping this native species will spread in the Reserve rather than the ubiquitous introduced Queensland Blue couch. (September 2008)
