European Red Fox

The European red fox was introduced to Victoria in 1843 for hunting but has since spread to all states and territories. It has contributed significantly to the decline in many of our smaller native animals. I recently found three dead animals (two ringtail possums and a white headed pigeon) near the entrance to a fox’s den. Inside the den we could hear a fox cub “crying”. The next day we found the two week old fox cub wandering around outside the den. It appeared to have been abandoned. We took it to the Willawong Animal Refuge Centre. There are several fox dens within the reserve and council officers are planning to take action to destroy them.
