Juncus usitatus

Juncus usitatusFamily: Juncaceae
Genus: Juncus
Common names: Common Rush, Pin Rush, Mat Rush
ALA reference

It is quite remarkable how this species has multiplied in the last couple of years. Two years ago there was only one group of plants clustered around a water hole. Now the plants are scattered right down the water-course and in other areas as well. I think they look particularly striking where they are now growing on what we believe to be the old dam site. (October 2011)

A dozen or more of these plants appeared a few years ago after heavy rain around one of the holes in the bottom of the erosion gully. Where they are growing is periodically filled with water after rain and the pool of water can remain for a week or more before it dries up. However between rain spells the soil seems to get quite dry but the plants have continued to grow and thrive. They flowered for the first time this month and this enabled me to have them identified. (November 2009)
