Juncus polyanthemus

Posted on Updated on

Juncus polyanthemusFamily: Juncaceae
Genus: Juncus
Common name: Australian Grey Rush
ALA reference

This plant appeared about a year ago at the lower end of the erosion gully where the soil is usually quite damp. It has now flowered for the first time and this has enabled its identification to be confirmed. The photo shows Juncus polyanthemus on the left and Juncus usitatus on the right and in the background. It is very like a larger version of Juncus usitatus with grey-green glaucous stems that are about 2 to 4 mm in diameter. While J. usitatus is now fairly widely scattered in the Reserve this is the only plant of J. polyanthemus that I have found. (October 2012)
