Macrothelypteris torresiana

Posted on Updated on

Macrothelypteris torresianaFamily: Thelypteridaceae
Genus: Macrothelypteris
Common name: Swordfern
ALA reference

When I first spotted this fern I thought it might be a tree fern. It has tall erect fronds about 1.5 metres in length that superficially appear to come from a central growing point. However the fronds actually come from a thick creeping rhizome and it never develops a trunk. This species is native to tropical and subtropical Africa and Asia with the range also extending to both northern and southern Queensland. (October 2012)
