Melastoma malabathricum subsp malabathricum

Posted on Updated on

Melastoma malabathricumFamily: Melastomataceae
Genus: Melastoma
Common names: Blue Tongue, Native Lasiandra
ALA reference

Three small seedlings of this highly attractive understorey shrub have appeared recently in the moist soil beside the erosion gully. However the swamp wallaby has nibbled the tops off two of the three plants. This shrub grows to about 2 metres and produces pink-mauve flowers to about 5 cm across. The flowers are followed by pink to red berries. The fruit are sweet and edible but they stain the lips and tongue blue-black – hence the common name. (June 2011)
