Species: Tectocoris diophthalmus
Common names: Cotton Harlequin Bug
I found two groups of Cotton Harlequin Bug nymphs on one of the Hibiscus heterophyllus (Native Rosella) trees. The bugs, which are an introduced pest, are native to Central America and are particularly attracted to our native hibiscus where they suck the sap from the tree. I was surprised to find that all the males (pictured) congregated in one group while the females were in a separate group. Might be like the Aussie barbecue syndrome.
